As the new year begins, the internet is buzzing about 2026 being the “new 2016”. Marking a decade since 2016, people all around the world are revisiting old trends and aesthetics, seeking a second chance. Online, people have been reflecting on how the internet has changed over the years, many even agreeing that 2016 was the last year it felt positive and lighthearted.
Platforms that were once used to showcase talent and spread positivity have turned into carefully curated and performative platforms. For many, it feels as if success is more tied to wealth and fame rather than genuine talent or creativity.
To call 2026 the old 2016 means for many, that this year stands as a chance to revisit old trends and regain positive internet usage. Bringing back 2016 is often seen as a way to revisit the connection and joy people felt before COVID disrupted everyday life.
Kaitlyn Findlay, a student contributor for Toronto Metropolitan University, has shared her own thoughts on this idea. She describes 2016 as a cultural milestone, noting that many elements of 2016 are making a return this year.
One example is the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, making a return in 2026, reminding many of 2016. Along with Stranger Things, which originally premiered in 2016, a new season was released, coinciding with the new year. Countless other trends invoke nostalgia and remind many of the “old era”.
2016 was a year when the internet felt more unpolished, less curated, and less performative. Haya Yusuf, a contributor on Medium, highlights 2016 as a year full of new aesthetics and fun that people remember fondly.
Yusuf also notes that nostalgia increases feelings of emotional safety, social connection, and optimism. When people feel overwhelmed by the present, nostalgia allows for them to seek emotional safety, explaining why so many are embracing the idea of a “new 2016”.

As the internet continues to discuss this new idea, content creators are actively reviving old songs, aesthetics, trends, and filters. One example is the pink Rio De Janeiro filter, which has resurfaced as users reminisce on the past.
Supporting the trends, Snapchat has even released an album full of popular filters from 2016, encouraging the revival.
For many, 2026 represents more than just a throwback; it is an opportunity to bring back positivity, along with fun, creativity, and freedom that people remember from 2016.
