The holidays are here, which means Christmas songs are blaring everywhere. Every store, radio station, and streaming platform is playing the same rotation of holiday hits. It can end up turning holiday cheer into dread for anyone working retail. While dozens of songs try to gain consumers attention, one song has become the champion of holiday streaming: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” It’s the most-played song that everyone loves to hate.
During the holidays, many find happiness by listening to Christmas music. But everyone has their own opinion on which song is either overplayed, underrated, amazing, or just flat out annoying. When you think of a Christmas song, the first song that pops into your head is most likely “All I Want for Christmas is You” by the queen herself Mariah Carey. A lot of people would say that it’s the best Christmas song to have hit the charts, and there’s a reason why it’s been the number one most popular Christmas song for over 30 years. Others disagree by saying it’s annoying and way too overplayed. “The song gets too much credit for being nothing more than an average Christmas song,” says journalist Jamie Weiss.
A Holiday Hit that captures the overall meaning of the holiday season is “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams. Senior Hailey Hollard at BBHHS says, ”It captures the fun part of the season without it being overstimulating.” Unlike many popular carols that focus heavily on the religious or commercial aspects of Christmas, Williams’s song is upbeat and puts people into a celebrational mood.
One thing that has become increasingly popular this year is house music. As a result of it becoming so popular, one thing that is also rising in popularity this year is Christmas and house music mixing songs together. Many people are very happy about this, but some people say that it’s stupid that this type of music is rising in popularity.
Most people think that we should just go back to classes. Sometimes you can’t beat songs like “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Bing Crosby and “Winter Wonderland” by Felix Bernard and Richard Bernhard Smith. These songs give people the feeling of walking down the stairs on christmas morning and seeing presents under the tree delivered fresh from Santa.
A question that has some wondering is that can a new song hit number one? Last year that question was answered when “A Nonsense Christmas” by Sabrina Carpenter was at the top of the charts for weeks this time last year. Even though Sabrina Carpenter is a very controversial artist, many would agree that the song “A Nonsense Christmas” gives off holiday vibes and is overall a good, basic holiday hit.
The Most popular Christmas album is “Christmas” released on October 25th 2011 by Michael Buble. The album in total has over 3.6 billion streams across all platforms, making it the most popular Christmas album across all streaming services.
The annual holiday playlist is a constant tug-of-war between the old and the new. While Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” might be popular with some, old classics like Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas is still popular too. Music is constantly changing with new trends, so it makes sense that the holiday tunes have trends as well. The best choice is to consider making a holiday play list with a little bit of the old and the new to try to give everyone a happy holiday vibe.
