As the second semester approaches at BBHHS, many students are wanting the school to offer more classes like driving, expanded art, and language programs. Students have a range of creative ideas they hope the administration will consider.
Students like Olivia Horvath, freshman, think that even though the school already has a lot of art classes, they should offer classes that are more widespread instead of focusing on just one specific objective in the class. She says, “I know that there are already a lot, but I think that there should be more variety for kids who don’t want to do just one thing.” Many students would agree with her because even though the school already offers so much, it would benefit a lot of students if they offered a class that had multiple objectives and multiple different projects rather than just one topic or one thing that they focus on for the whole year.
Beyond art, many students also think expanding language options could help prepare them for college and travel.
When asked how more language classes would benefit students, many shared that it could help them prepare for the future. “ It would be making it so we can travel more extensively. And so we could have more job opportunities in the future and stuff,” says freshman Rosie Neal. Students believe that adding these classes could have a lasting impact on their education and future.
Students have mixed feelings about whether or not the administration would support these classes being offered in the future. If students really want specific classes, the administration would probably support the students and their ideas. “Yeah, I don’t see why they wouldn’t,” says freshman Bijoux Rousseau.
Driving is obviously an important part of many people’s everyday life. Many students find it odd that BBHHS doesn’t offer a driving class or any driving courses during the school day. Even freshmen are thinking about their futures and a big part of it is driving. For example, freshman Wanika Chopra says, “ A driving class would be helpful because I feel like it would help students learn how to drive, especially freshmen. Maybe even a junior before they get a permit, a driving class would be especially helpful for the students who drive like maniacs around campus.” Having a driving class may improve the School’s campus safety.
The idea of new classes also raises questions about student stress and balance. Obviously if students don’t put in effort or commitment they will have a bigger workload and that may contribute to doing things that cause stress. Horvath weighs in on students’ stress levels saying,“[It’s not an issue] unless you just like don’t try in the class and don’t complete your projects.”
With so many creative ideas floating around, the future of BBHHS classes may look very different. If administrators listen to student input, next semester’s schedule may include more opportunities that inspire, challenge, and prepare students for what comes next.
