As environmental issues have grown concerns worldwide, students at BBHHS have not failed to acknowledge these concerns and take action. Juniors Carina Kosla and Diya Anand have taken action and created a non-profit dedicated to helping the environment at BBHHS.
This non-profit is called Youth Eco Impact. Two years ago, Kosla attended the NEO Youth Climate Summit. She described the experience as eye-opening to the environmental issues around us and really inspired her to take action.
This inspired them to create the nonprofit “Our mission is to reduce the amount of plastic and the plastic demand as well as to encourage environmental stewardship among young people,” says Kosla.
The organization has hosted multiple community cleanups and educational workshops on topics such as microplastics, recycling, and climate science. They have also earned a mini-grant from Laurel School.
This year, Youth Eco Impact is on a mission to help businesses switch from single-use plastics to more environmentally friendly options. By getting this grant, the organization can give money to businesses to help them pay for the cost of more environmentally friendly items (utensils, straws, plates).
The organization has also initiated a fundraiser to raise money for this cause. Right now, open through October 5th, students and community members can donate old clothing and household items to the drive! This drive will help not only to reuse old items, but also to raise money for an important cause!
Youth Eco Impact is looking to expand. Through growing projects, the group hopes to make a great impact on the community and school and inspire others to care for the environment. The group is also open to new members!
Whether you are very knowledgeable or even just interested in making a positive impact on the environment, Youth Eco Impact provides a perfect opportunity to help out. Students can get involved with low and high-commitment leadership positions or join as a member!
