Emily Zemko, math teacher, and Gianna Uber, Physical Education teacher, are the newest additions to the hive at Brecksville Broadview Heights High School. Mrs. Zemko and Mrs. Uber are both looking forward to teaching during their first year and they both chose the high school for the amazing students and community.
They have both expressed excitement to be starting their teaching careers. In addition, they both have grown up in Ohio and close to the BBH school district, so they are familiar with the commitment to education that is expected from the community.
They plan on keeping their students engaged in many different ways during class. Uber says, “I want to provide a variety of different activities that encourage movement, teamwork, and fun. I want students to be able to discover new ways to stay active and find something new that they might enjoy, whether it’s just a traditional sport, a fitness challenge, or some creative games.” By using hands-on activities and teamwork, Uber plans on making her classroom a fun environment for everyone.
Zemko loves to have fun in the classroom, but wants to make sure that it’s balanced with learning the curriculum. She says, “I would say understanding [is important], especially when it comes to algebra, because you guys are coming from middle school and it’s a big change. Math is really hard, so understanding what’s going on is really helpful during class. When you’re having fun, it’s sometimes easier.”
Zemko also cares a lot about her students. She’s states, “If you have a relationship with me, you’re more likely to pay attention in my class.” She wants students to know that they will have support and help in the classroom. She also wants to keep the classroom engaging. She wants to make sure students are having fun, but also learning.
Both Uber and Zemko describe their teaching patterns in different ways. Mrs. Uber says, “I like moving through movement. I’m a PE teacher, so I believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged and enjoy the process.”
Overall, Brecksville is a great district for new teachers. Both teachers said that they enjoy the community. “ I love it so far, it’s a really great district, and all the kids are super nice and fun, same with the administrators and teachers,” says Zemko.
Uber says, “I really enjoyed it here right away. It always felt welcoming. I felt like family from the start. The students and staff have been so supportive, and I’m excited that it’s my first place to start my teaching career.”
As these two teachers enjoy their first year teaching at BBHHS, they hope to connect with students and help them learn new things everyday. They want their students feel comfortable in their class and know that they’re always welcome no matter what.
