As it becomes warmer outside, the BBHHS Boys and Girls lacrosse teams are gearing up for the start of their season! The girls have their season opener 3/18 at Rocky River and the boys open their season a little later on 4/1 against Wadsworth at home.
Both teams have a lot to look forward to this upcoming season. Senior Captain Katie Delahunty says,” The thing I am most looking forward to this season is being a senior. This year it offers me the opportunity to be a leader for the younger girls on the team.” During her senior season, Katie hopes to leave a positive lasting impression on her underclassmen teammates for the seasons in the future.
Katie Delahunty has been named one of the captains of the lacrosse team as well as seniors: Mallory Mccrodden, Ava Petros, Carly Strmac, and Katelyn Hasernol for the girls’ side. The boys’ captains have yet to be named.
Players to watch this season on the girls’ side include sophomores Cate Gutridge and Jayla Collard; they are both huge assets to the team and are both well trained midfielders. On the boys’ side, freshman Deacon Toth has shown he can play at a higher level and will hopefully be a great asset to the team this season.
Since last year, both of our lacrosse teams have been working to improve for this season. “This season we have all become closer as not only teammates, but also as friends, which has definitely helped the team chemistry and is reflected in our play,” says Mccrodden.
Having a close relationship with your team is very important no matter what sport you are in. Team chemistry makes a huge difference. Senior Patrick Redinger says, “We play more as a team this year. Everyone is touching the ball and contributing rather than a 1 or 2 man show. This is an improvement from last year and should have a positive effect on the team.”
Both teams are playing some good competition this year. The Lady Bees expect their toughest game to be against Revere, but Delahunty believes it will be a competitive one this year! On the boys side they expect their toughest game to be Hudson. They are always good competition because they are one of the top teams in the state. They also always have at least 1-3 athletes committed for college lacrosse every year.
What will be their key to success this year? Delahunty says, “Our key to success will be learning to stay cool, calm, and collected in stressful situations or bad weather.”
Redinger says, “The key to success is playing for each other, and as a team, rather than individually.” Both teams are hoping to have a great season this year!
