On Sunday February 2, 2025, the annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles California at Cypto.com arena. The night is used to honor and recognize music and artists from the past year. The HyBreeze wants to recap highlights of the night and get BBHHS fans’ opinions on the awards.
The night started on the red carpet, where artists showed off their best looks in honor of music’s biggest night. Some standouts on the carpet included, Sabrina Carpenter in a custom, powder blue JW Anderson gown, Chappell Roan in a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier dress, and Taylor Swift in a custom, red mini dress by Vivienne Westwood.
Overall, people enjoyed the 67th annual ceremony. Sophomore, Landon Mroczka says, “I thought the Grammys this year were really entertaining! I enjoyed watching all the performances and seeing who got each award.” Unfortunately the ratings did not represent this satisfaction, as the 2025 ceremony was the fourth-lowest-watched Grammys of the 21st century so far and marked a 9% decrease from last year’s television audience size, with an audience of 15.4 million viewers.
Due to it being such a big year in music, people had their favorite artists for many categories. Beyoncé led the nominations with 11 for “Cowboy Carter,” Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone all entered the ceremony with 7 nominations each, followed by Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift with 6 each.
Throughout the night people got to see Best New Artist nominees Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Doechii perform their hit songs. Senior Morgan Lahrmer enjoyed Carpenter’s performance saying, “I liked how she made it entertaining and fun but still sang really well.”
Mroczka exclaims, “Chappell Roan’s performance of Pink Pony Club took the cake for me. The stage design, choreography, makeup, costumes, and the music were top tier!”
The artist whose performance stood out the most to Senior, Lexi Zelinsky was Doechii. “To be a newer artist in the spotlight, I can’t even imagine the nerves and intimidation of having to perform in front of some of the most famous singers.”
It wouldn’t be the Grammys without snubs. Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift both left the ceremony empty handed. As a massive Eilish fan, Zelinsky felt she was robbed saying, “I was so upset for her because she’s very open about how hard she’s worked on this album, tour and each song. Even if it wasn’t Album of the Year, I wish she could have gotten something.”
Without a doubt, the biggest category of the night was Album of the Year. It was highly competitive this year as the nominees were some of the biggest and best artists of today, such as Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and more. “Cowboy Carter” took home the award, breaking Beyoncé’s streak of losses in the category and making her the first black woman to win Album of the Year in over 25 years.
This win was met with lots of pushback and animosity from the general public as many people thought it was not deserving. While some defended the win by citing “Cowboy Carter’s” cultural significance and innovativeness, others didn’t understand why this album won Beyoncé the title. Zelinsky says, “Anyone else in that category deserved it more than Beyoncé, coming down to just how the world reacted to the pieces. Beyonce doesn’t compare to the other nominees.”
Lahrmer said, “It was a very competitive year, and no matter who won, people were going to be angry.”
As the 2026 Grammys approach, people are already making their predictions for the nominees. The standout favorite as of right now is no other than Lady Gaga. Her 7th studio album, “Mayhem” will be released March 7, 2025 and already has g lots of attention. The lead singles, “Die With A Smile,” “Disease,” and most recently “Abracadabra” have all made waves on the charts, showcasing a new, experimental sound for the pop icon. As anticipation builds for the release, the music world is already buzzing about the potential impact “Mayhem” could have on the upcoming Grammy race.
In conclusion, the 2025 Grammy Awards were a night filled with show stopping red carpets, unforgettable performances, and record breaking wins. The event highlighted the talent and innovation in today’s music scene, leaving fans excited for what the future holds.
