Valentine’s Day at BBHHS is always filled with excitement, but nothing spreads love and laughter quite like the annual Singing Grams. Students purchase a personalized musical surprise for their friends, teachers, or significant others, and choose from a variety of vocal and instrumental groups performing heartfelt and fun songs.
Senior Lilah Reasor shares how much effort goes into preparing for the performances. “The performers usually prepare by getting in their groups and rehearsing the songs together before quality checks early in the week.” Each group selects their own Valentine’s-themed setlist, with popular choices ranging from romantic ballads to fast-beat tunes.
Senior Alexis Zelinsky emphasizes how accessible the tradition is for everyone. “It is so easy to purchase a singing gram. They are sold every lunch period, and there are so many groups with a variety of songs to choose from. All you need is $5 and a special person you want to buy one for.”
With classics like “Until I Found You” by Stephen Sanchez and “Baby” by Justin Bieber, students eagerly await the chance to serenade their peers. The performances add an extra layer of excitement to the school day. “It’s really funny when someone buys them for someone every single period of the day, or for multiple people in one period, because we leave the classroom and come back multiple times, and everyone finds it hilarious,” Reasor explains.
Zelinsky, participating for the first time this year, recalls seeing the joy Singing Grams brought in previous years. “I remember when my chemistry teacher, Ms. Youngless, got one and was singing along and having such a fun time.”
Beyond just romantic gestures, Singing Grams are a way to celebrate friendship and appreciation. “You don’t have to be dating someone for Singing Grams to be fun,” Reasor says. “You can get them for teachers or friends.” The event transforms an ordinary school day into something memorable, bringing students together through music.
For many performers, the best part of the experience is making others smile. “I’m most excited to sing for my friends and teachers,” Zelinsky says. “I love it when they get super embarrassed!”
As the tradition continues, Singing Grams remain a highlight of Valentine’s Day at BBHHS, ensuring that the halls are filled with love, laughter, and plenty of music.
