The cold weather can make it tempting to snuggle up under blankets and binge-watch shows until spring rolls around. But, guess what? Staying cooped up all winter isn’t just a physical slump – it can mess with mental health, too. As people navigate the chillier months, here are some fun and inspiring ways to stay active, motivated, and feeling the best!

Riley McPherson, a senior wrestler at BBHHS, knows the importance of staying on top of his game even when sunlight feels like a distant memory. “It’s easy to fall into a slump, but accomplishing small things, like going to the gym or even cleaning your room, helps keep you motivated and positive,” says McPherson. With wrestling practices often keeping him indoors, McPherson makes sure to keep moving so he doesn’t lose that sense of accomplishment.
Although it might be freezing outside, don’t let it stop having some outdoor fun! Whether it’s sledding, snowboarding, tubing, or even a good old fashioned scavenger hunt, there’s plenty of things to enjoy during these cold months. Even if people aren’t fans of the cold, there are activities like bowling, swimming, yoga, and dancing.
Staying active isn’t just about fitness – it’s about feeling good mentally too. Jaci Owens, guidance counselor, says, “Waking up early, eating a healthy breakfast, setting goals, and making time for self care can make a huge difference in how you feel.”
With the start of a new semester and new classes, it’s easy to feel stressed. It’s important to remember that building positive habits now will help keep balance. Health experts from Nemours Teen Health say, “It [exercise] benefits every part of your body, including your mind.” Even if people are not in the mood for a workout, a quick walk or short YouTube video on yoga may be just what the body needs.
This winter, take on the cold with energy, a positive attitude and a little movement. Whether it’s taking on a new hobby, heading outside for some snow filled adventures, or carving out time to rewind and relax, small steps can lead to big changes.
Stay active, stay motivated, and most importantly, stay true.
