The Holidays are known as the time of joy and giving, charity and family. It is a time of great excitement where everyone decorates their houses and students can’t wait for winter break. But it is also a time of music. For this edition of Musical Artists of the Month, the Hybreeze will interview students and staff about their favorite and least favorite Christmas songs.
Senior, Ethan Schlauch believes that “Deck the Halls” is both the best Christmas song, and the most underrated Christmas song by far. He says, “It just sounds nice.” His least favorite song is “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” by Elmo & Patsy. He says, “Christmas songs are not good songs, they’re just holiday songs,” and describes them as “Goofy and fun.” He says “Happy Holidays” is the most overplayed out of all of the Christmas songs.
Junior, Lucy Shijo likes “The Chanukah Song” by Adam Sandler, which was performed on the “Saturday Night Live” show by him. She likes the song because “It’s by Adam Sandler.” She also gave “The Twelve Days of Christmas” as another song she liked. When asked about what the worst Christmas song was, Shijo states,” It depends on who sings the song.”
Freshman, Jezeah Ikner says, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” is the best song because it has a good story. He also likes “Jingle Bells” because it is a classic. He doesn’t like “Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer” because “It sounds stupid.” When asked about underrated songs, Ikner gave “Last Christmas” as an example because it sounds good and has a good hook. On the other hand, Ikner believes “Jingle Bell Rock” is overrated because he believes it isn’t as good as the original song.
