“Wicked,” a movie musical adaptation directed by John M. Chu starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, comes out in theaters November 22, 2024. The movie is a prequel to the cinematic classic, “The Wizard of OZ” and tells the untold story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, Glinda the Good.
Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winning, vocal powerhouse Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba in this adaptation alongside Grammy winning pop superstar Ariana Grande who plays Galinda. The pair have formed a special relationship throughout their time on this film and feel lucky to work beside each other.
Director John M. Chu was dedicated to creating an authentic movie set, going so far as to plant 9 million tulips and actually construct the Emerald City. He wasn’t interested in using CGI or visual effects because he did want to “cheap Oz out.” He felt immense pressure to create a whole new world for this movie which he achieved by building things like a to-scale 16-ton train that runs through Oz. Chu’s past projects include “Crazy Rich Asians,” 2018, and “In The Heights,” 2021.
Amelie Russo, Senior Drama Club member, couldn’t be more excited for “Wicked.” She’s been a fan of the musical for years and is interested to see how it is translated on the big screen. Russo is ecstatic to witness Erivo and Grande’s interpretation of these vibrant characters, the stunning visuals the film offers, and the elaborate sets that bring the iconic story to life.
“Wicked” is an intricate story of friendship and acceptance told by two unlikely friends. The film will include incredible performances by talented actors, remarkable visuals that add to the magic of Oz, and timeless songs that will always be popular. Go see “Wicked” in theaters November 22, 2024.
