Bees Volleyball is digging into their season! So far,the Bees have had a rough start going 0-4 in their first games.
Coach Sydney McKay says, “We have a relatively young team. We’re working hard in the gym and the weight room. The girls are pushing themselves daily to be the best they can be on the court. We had a tough losing streak in the middle there, but we’re now on a 5 game winning streak! Our conference is very challenging, but I know the girls are up for it!”
Senior Jessie Zenir is the main Captain, while Seniors Laynie Kraus, Sophia Venesile, and Christina Petkunas rotate being the Assistant Captains. To continue improving, the girls plan to work on mental toughness, communication, good mental mindset, and continuing to play aggressively.
This season the girls have a lot to look forward to since they have improved so much since the beginning of the season. Captain Jessie Zenir says, “I’m looking forward to playing Wadsworth again, as that game was very close and we should’ve won. I’m also sad, but excited to be spending my last volleyball season with my close friends and coaches who have had such a large impact on my volleyball career and life in general. I’m also excited for senior night against solon.”
Since they are a pretty young team, they have a ton of upcoming stars. Senior, Christina Petkunas says, “ Junior Madeline Petty, works hard in both practice and in a game setting and it’s is paying off as her hits and blocks as a middle has been outstanding. [Also, Sophomore] Hailey Gutfranski is a 6 rotation right side, and has really proven her spot as both a setter and a hitter. Junior Caitlin Mihalek, has been handling being a varsity starter for the first time really well.”
Petkunas continues to explain a couple things that the team now does very well. She says, “Being aggressive and lifting each other up when we’re down.”
Senior Laynie Kraus adds, “Being scrappy on defense, being aggressive when we’re out of system.”
Coach and Jessie Zenir sums it up by explaining that “being aggressive and not playing timid is important; Along with supporting each other to get in the headspace we need to win.Kraus’s favorite game has been our match against Canfield. It was the most fun so far this season. The girls locked in and worked hard to keep their mental game strong, which allowed us to give Canfield their only loss of the season so far!”
Their next games are at Wadsworth 9/24, home vs Stow 9/26, and home vs Rocky River 9/28. Bee sure to come show support for the Bees volleyball team.
