As the sky gets darker and the nights become colder, the start of school has everybody’s head in a swirl. Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School has welcomed the class of 2028 into their doors as they journey through their last four years of school.
As 265 freshmen have made their way into the hive, one can only wonder what’s going through their minds. Luckily, this article reads the mind of the new class.
Common electives that the class of 2028 are taking are photography, woodworking and graphic design. Interestingly enough, many are also taking honors classes as well as AP classes.
In an article titled, ‘10 Tips for High School Freshman’ from the U.S. News outlet it states, “Experts advise students to pick classes that challenge them, but not to the point where it’s overwhelming.”
Mia Murphy, freshman and volleyball star, says her favorite class so far has been photography. “We learned how to take photographs in the dark room. It’s really fun and we have done positive and negative pictures.”
Karma Philopos, freshman and member of the pickleball club, says her favorite class is honors biology. “The teacher makes the class enjoyable and I have many friends in that class. It is also a fun course to take overall.”
With that being said, BBHHS has many electives a student can take that are in their interest. Taking new electives is also a way to develop new skills and find new passions.
Switching to a bigger school can sometimes feel overwhelming. “Students may face pressure to fit into a certain mold in high school, But don’t let that dissuade you from sticking to your values and passions,” says U.S. News.
In addition to fitting in, many freshmen are worried about the major difference in homework and studying.
Owen Bragg, freshman and wrestler, says, “[there is] way more homework. I have to balance my home time with sports and remembering to do my homework.”
Other students like Zihao Lin, freshman, say that language barriers are a new struggle that have popped up in high school.
It’s important that students at BBHHS remember to stay inclusive as this is a big change for the class of 2028. Oftentimes, juniors and seniors are seen “adopting” underclassmen, meaning they help guide them throughout their journey in high school.
As this is a time for great change within the freshman class, many of them are prepared to take on this new school year and make new friends.
Sophia Riley, freshman and member of the marching band, left a tip for her future self saying, “Don’t worry about other people, only worry about yourself. Everything will work out.”
With that being said, buckle up class of 2028, it will bee the ride of a lifetime!
