As fall approaches rapidly, the time for the fall musical draws closer and closer. “SIX,” the high school adaptation of the Broadway musical, will be coming to Brecksville Broadview Heights High School on Thursday through Saturday this weekend. “SIX,” fittingly named as a look into the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives, will be a retelling of history starring six talented young women.
“SIX” the musical will be taking place at the BBHHS auditorium September 26-28 at 7pm. Tickets will be available at the doors, and everyone is encouraged to come to the impressive production. Benjamin Lesh, head of the drama department and instructor for set design, has high hopes for this musical. “We hit the ground running [after summer] and everything’s going great,” he said after being asked about the preparations for the musical.
As opening night approaches rapidly, the cast members have truly been putting in a tremendous effort to make sure the performance is flawless. Rehearsals are held three times a week, and all six girls and their understudies have been constantly running lines and going over choreography.
After evaluating the concept of the musical, there is one minor issue that has been discussed. The controversy behind the fact that there are only six roles in the musical, and the fact that all six roles are for females. In certain environments, these issues may be a recipe for disaster.
However, it seems that there is “no drama” in the drama department. Senior, Addison Johnson, a member of the tech team remarks, “There definitely were people that were a bit upset… but you have to go in with the mindset that you can be confident, but aware of the fact that you might not get the role, and that’s okay!”
Most people seem to be optimistic about the upcoming performance. In addition, there are few to no sour remarks about not being able to perform in “SIX”. If people did not get a role this time around, there is going to be another musical, “Little Shop of Horrors” later this year with more performing opportunities.
Because of the promise of another performance, the six actresses and their understudies don’t have to worry about facing scrutiny from the other members. Catherine Howard, says, “I really think it’s an amazing thing. We all have become so very close and comfortable with each other.”
Now, with less than a month until the musical, students, parents, and teachers alike all wait for the opening day. The cast, tech team, and everyone involved have been working tremendously hard to make this performance a roaring success.
