School is almost out and summer is about to begin! Not having to go to school for 7 hours a day opens up so many opportunities. Some love sleeping in, while others don’t sleep at all, at sleepovers with friends. Summer is the chance to make so many memories. Here are some things to do over the summer and even some local activities to give a try over Summer ‘24.
Hiking is a great way to spend time in nature, especially living right by the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Metroparks. Check out the different paths, visit rivers, creeks, bridges, and train tracks. There are also so many different animals throughout the land and water and very interesting historical sights. Even having an outdoor picnic is great fun.
Another staple of summer is going to the fair and there are many different local fairs including, the Ohio State Fair, Richland County Fair (August 4-10), Medina County Fair (July 29-August 4), and the Cuyahoga County Fair (August 6-11). There is also the local Brecksville and Broadview Heights Home Days. Brecksville Homedays are June 21-23. Broadviews Heights are July 11-14. There are games, live music, rides, food, and many more special events for each day at the fair. To end the day there is a fireworks show.
Another thrilling summer activity is going to an amusement park and Clevelanders have one of the best amusement parks in the country. Cedar Point is now open and there are many exhilarating roller coasters, rides, games, and even water rides. Plus there is a waterpark next door if roller coasters aren’t a thing.
Luke Riddles, sophomore, says, “I like amusement parks because they’re a fun experience and you can hang out with friends while there.
Kristina Yakushchenko, senior, explains, “I love the adrenaline rush and my favorite ride is probably Valravn.”
Also going to a local beach on a hot summer day and laying in the warm sand or taking a dip in the water is another option. Huntington Beach and Edgewater Beach are close and perfect for a quick trip to a beach.
In addition, both the Brecksville and Broadview Heights Recreation Center have amazing pools. Pool schedules are available online and along with different swim events. Brecksville even has night swims on certain dates. There are also concession stands at the Brecksville pool and both recreation centers have water slides to cool off during a hot day.
Camping or even doing a campout in the backyard with tents and late-night stories are fun. Don’t forget the fire and smores too! Trampolines provide a great option to lay pillows and blankets down to sleep under the stars.
Maybe consider a concert? One concert students at BBHHS are attending include 21 Savage, on May 29 at Blossom Music Center. There is also word of people going to the Eras tour and Mitski (September).
People also like to go on late-night bike rides with friends and bringing out the old chalk to decorate sidewalks or driveways. A board night with friends or presenting fun Google slides to each other is also good for laughs together.
Consider going to the theater or local drive in to see upcoming movies including Inside Out 2, Despicable Me 4, Descendants- Red of Rise, Deadpool 3, It Ends with us, or Alien.
Get out and start a lemonade stand or just sell small items to make some money over the summer.
Farmer’s markets and different local markets are fun too. Don’t forget to support small businesses in Brecksville!
No matter what is done this summer, enjoy it and make memories, with a summer bucket list!
